from Prague :-)

Thank u all for wishing me goodluck. This is my third day in Prague and I just had my breakfast. Its almost lunch time in India, yet I don’t feel that time difference thing coz even at home I wake up very late. So actually here I am prompt on time for breakfast 🙂
Yesterday there was a bit of snowfall here and the city looks beautiful today, partially clad with thin flakes of newly formed snow. When I look outside my window, I can see Vltava river in constant flow and there is a small ferry quite close to the window, protruding into the water, containing a few trees, neatly organized themselves like students in a school assembly. I can see all this so close coz I am staying in a boat!!!
I was not this pleasant day before yesterday when I landed here. It was 4 o clock, and the city looked dull!! By the time our matinee movies make half time there, its dark in here. I entered my botel [hotel in a boat] room and it was shockingly small!! The only contact I had in Prague, Mr. George Eassey was out of coverage!! For a moment, I thought I made a big mistake coming down here. Adding spice to my worries was the Czech language, which sounded greek and latin to me. So, that night, I did what I do the best. Eat and sleep!!
Yesterday morning when I woke up, I made a decision to explore the city. By that time I got accustomed to the room where I am staying right now. I had a travel guide which taught me some golden phrases in Czech, equivalent to “where to eat, where is the bus stop, where can I buy a sim card, which tram goes to the city”… and things like that. Before I set myself out to inflict my language abilities on poor Czech – ans [hey, I can actually call them chekkans!!!], Mr.George’ s phone call came. In a couple of hours, he came to my rescue and from then on, it had been just wonderful till the moment.
George uncle, as I call him is a man whom I met in Cochin airport last month. We just spoke for 5 mins and that’s all. I didn’t know what he did and who he was. That’s actually the beauty of it. Sometimes meeting perfect strangers is quite an experience. And in his case, it really was. He took me to the old town square, astronomical clock, a few restaurants and an interesting place called a tea room [this is my English translation, in Czech, it’s a little greek :-)]. This tea room is like an intellectual hub in here. When u make a reservation, if u r a poet or an artist, u get first preference. I really don’t know what I was doing there.
Conversations with george was actually quite informative. He is a pioneer in ashtaanga ayurveda and has written almost a dozen books on botany & related subjects. U name a famous personality and he has got direct connections with them. For example, I am a big fan of John Trovolta and Tom Cruise. Guess what!! George has treated John and has spoken to Tom Cruise when he was shooting MI 4 in Prague. His daughter has worked for Obama and during the conversation, he casually mentioned meeting Bill Gates once. I was wondering, what the hell is this man doing, talking to me!! 🙂
I told u guys that meeting perfect strangers is sometimes quite an experience. Yesterday night when I was having dinner with George, Yana [george’s student, she’s Czech], Michael [yana ‘s boyfriend, he’s half Portuguese] and Sathe [he ‘s from Haryana] I really felt this. In an Indian restaurant flooded with foreign nationals, we were talking about innumerable things. Indian music, Indian mythology, Czech movies, thalassery, samoothiri, places in Europe… everything under the sun was a topic of discussion. Sathe was entertaining us with his mind blowing “shaayarees[4 line poems].” It was wonderful to see that miles away from India, that man is still keeping his passion for language and literature.
From there, George took me to a jazz club. It had started to snow and I was shivering like anything. Once I reached the jazz club – U Satre Pani, I heard some extra ordinary musicians. It was like a cherry on top of the wonderful day I had. Don’t know what Prague has in store for me further. But so far, it has been more than beautiful!!!
Ahoj [that’s goodbye in Czech (I think) :-)]

    Hi Vineeth,
Good to read about your experiences in the new place.

I’m really surprised that you wonder about NRI’s passion about language and culture. NRIs really put effort to make their kids practice indian culture, music, language etc. NRIs are more passionate about indian culture and tradition than a normal person who lives in India. People appreciate value of things only if they loose it!

When kids living in India, dance on hearing and singing filthy bollywood songs, most of the NRI kids of the same age can sing a keerthana or do an Indian classical dance(even though they can’t pronounce them correctly). It is just because their parents put explicit efforts instilling these things on them. Most of the NRI parents start sending their kids for classical music and dance as soon as they turn 4 or 5, even though they themselves know nothing about music and dance.

A parent living in India can never find these extra time, unless they themselves are passionate about arts. Most of the NRI kids associate dirty streets with India (:))but they value the culture, food language etc.

I also know american parents who adoted Indian kids driving them about 2 hrs in every week just to make them play cricket:) as they want the kids to keep the indian roots and do not want them to have identity crisis when they grow up as they have brown skin and look Indian, but now nothing about the indian culture. Since these kids grow up in american families, they are not worried about they not picking up american culture!

Keep associating with a lot of people. Just a suggestion, anyway, you visited the country, try to just pick up a word or two from the language with correct english spellings so that you can pronounce them better and we also can learn a word or two as we read your blog.

I’m sure that passionate NRIs will volunteer to teach you. That would be fun:)

    Enjoy the trip!

hey i read ur comments on malarvaadi. really glad that u liked it. but i really cannot agree to ur comment that it doesn’t belong to this generation. i am very much in contact with the villages in north kerala. thats where i am from. if u go around these places, u ll find a lot of old fashioned, genuine, thru thick and thin kind of friends. who doesn’t bother about life & future.. they just take things as it comes. i personally i know a few people like that. so i really can vouch on the fact that malarvaadi definitely belong to this generation. but its definitely not about career oriented, having it all planned out new generation..

        Vineeth,
I totally agree with you on this. The so-called NEW Gen-X, who have everything planned way in advance, even love, doesn’t belongs to the Malarvadi gen. They are more like my boyhood, during the glorious 90s.

    hi vineeth,

i have seen ur movie (could see only now as am staying Mysore), i will tell you what i felt – the subject i like so much (and so happy to find that you are such sincere in your relashionships, whatever kind of it may be) – the way you told it, is soooo simple (not a negative impression), and of course you can make nice films since you have made a good effort as a biginner – so, of course my expectations are too high now – about u as a film maker, but dont be scarred, because i wont hope too much in the first or second movie itself, but wish to see you are improving one by one in each step

    all the best ………..

    Vineeth,
Feeling Happy I came across your blog. Being an aspiring film writer, your posts with regards to the making of malarvadi was pure enlightenment for me. On seeing Malarvadi, my first thought was kind of negative. Not because the film is a bad one, but I thought it could have been much better. But aged 36 and still aspiring to be a film maker, I have no right to be your critic. But when I came across you mention post about having read an aspiring film maker’s screenplay, I was wondering if you would be kind enough to read a screenplay i have written, with regards to its plot and structure and maybe revert with your opinion on the same. It belongs to kind of pucca commercial suspense thriller genre, the whodunnit type, but i think you will be able to give me a frank opinion about the same. And don’t worry, having spend over 6 months developing the screenplay, One will never criticise other movies, however bad it may look. kindly respond
